 Selma March 50 Year Anniversary

Luther King Marches

In 1965, the battle for civil rights won a great triumph upon the passing of the Voting Rights Act, though not without great determination and sacrifice.  The act, which prohibits denying the right to vote to people on the basis of race, was passed only after years of struggle.

The culmination of that struggle was the famous civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, in 1965. On March 7, 1965, the marchers were met by police and state troopers as they crossed Edmund Pettus Bridge.

The police and troopers, many on horseback, charged the marchers, beat them with clubs, and sent several to the hospital, including now congressman John Lewis.  The marchers scattered.  But they reassembled and later marched the distance from Selma to Montgomery, where Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered a famous speech.  During the events in Selma and Montgomery, three people were killed by troopers or Klansmen —  Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb, and Viola Liuzzo.

On January 19th, 2015, a short 50 years after the historic marches in Alabama, the people of Green Bay united to commemorate these historic achievements and Martin Luther King’s birthday.  In Green Bay, police marched along side residents in a stark contrast to the events which took place in Alabama years ago when police attacked the marchers.   The Martin Luther King Jr. Day march was strongly supported by the community, with hundreds of participants, including police.  The commemorative march began at the Neville Public Museum and proceeded across the Walnut Street Bridge to reach its destination at the Divine Temple Church of God in Christ where speakers, including the Chief of Police, choirs and food were provided in an extended celebration.

The events of 1965 are portrayed in a powerful motion picture, Selma, which is up for an Oscar in the category of Best Motion Picture of the Year.  It is now showing in Green Bay.

Though in 50 years’ time a lot has changed, and great strides have been made towards equality among people of all races, there is still much to be done.  Millions of people of color, particularly African American, Asian, Latino, and First Nations, suffer from unemployment, poverty, poor schools, and often disproportionately high incarceration rates.  They have suffered most from the recent economic crisis, and many have lost their homes and jobs.  We’ve made enormous progress, but we have a long way to go.  Let us hope that Green Bay’s support of the commemoration of Selma and Martin Luther King means we are ready to do our part.

NeighborWorks Green Bay, 437 S. Jackson Street, Green Bay

A workshop entitled “Healthy Eating on a Budget” will give area residents a healthy dose of information that will assist them in learning how to improve the nutritional punch of their meals, and save money at the same time.  The workshop is part of the “Home & Life Workshops” that are being offered through a joint project between NeighborWorks Green Bay and neighborhood associations of Green Bay.  The “Eating Healthy on a Budget” workshops will take place on Tuesday, February 17th from 6-8 p.m. at NeighborWorks Green Bay, 437 S. Jackson Street, Green Bay.

Workshops are available to all Brown County residents, and a $5 suggested donation is requested.

“Being healthier should be a basic part of life” said Rashad J. Cobb, one of the event’s organizers.  “If you’re not eating right, it’s just going to drag you down and it’s hard to get anything done.  People often say that they don’t have the time to eat right, or that it costs too much.  Through this workshop, we’re going to show that eating healthy just takes some planning.  If you put your mind to it, eating healthy can add so much to your life and it doesn’t have to cost more.  In fact, it can even save you money in the long run.”

The workshop will be led by Dee Thetford, Nutrition Educator at Brown County UW-Extension.
